Every week I find the five worst defenses on the NFL slate and match each one with the offensive players best built to exploit it. The Week 4 slate runs Thursday, October 1 through Monday, October 5. I ranked defenses by blending results through Week 3 (Sportsnaut’s Week 4 rankings, FOX Sports and Football Database yardage tables), this week’s spreads and totals from Yahoo Sports and ESPN, and the latest injury and coaching news. Early-season rankings disagree with each other, so I kept only teams that looked bad on more than one measure. The Titans fell off my list after holding the Giants to 12 points in the rain.
🐬 1. Miami Dolphins at Minnesota Vikings
The situation: Sportsnaut ranks Miami dead last, 32nd of 32. The Dolphins gave up 31.0 points per game through two weeks, tied for third-most in the league. Opponents are completing 80.3% of their passes against them at 9.1 yards per attempt (31st), and Kansas City averaged 6.8 yards per play. Minnesota is a 10-point favorite, but the 38.5 total is one of the lowest of the week.
Scheme: Sean Duggan is the defensive coordinator, but head coach Jeff Hafley calls the defensive signals during games. Hafley’s Packers defenses leaned on two-high safety shells (he raised Cover 2 usage from 6.9% to 19.4% in Green Bay) and saved most of their pressure for late downs. Expect zone.
Who benefits: Jordan Addison caught 5 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown when Justin Jefferson left early in Week 3, and he has averaged 15.4 fantasy points in eight games without Jefferson. Jefferson (ankle sprain) could play, so check the injury report Friday. Kyler Murray is the quarterback, but the Vikings offense has not topped 250 total yards in any game, so keep volume expectations in check.
🦁 2. Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers
The situation: FOX Sports has Detroit last in total defense. The Lions allow touchdowns on 84.6% of red-zone trips and let opponents convert 56.1% of third downs. They have given up 979 passing yards and nine touchdowns through three games, and safeties Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph and Avonte Maddox are all out. Detroit is a 3.5-point favorite because its offense has scored 31 points in each of its first three games, which pushes the total to about 50. This one kicks off Sunday night.
Scheme: Kelvin Sheppard runs a zone-heavy defense. Through two weeks the Lions played zone on 76.2% of snaps, with Cover 3 on 46.5%, fifth-highest in the league.
Who benefits: Bryce Young has done his best work against zone this season. Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker are the primary targets, and Chuba Hubbard should get volume in a game that stays close. Darren Waller is a touchdown-or-nothing tight end. Young is playing through a lower-body injury and was pressured on 64% of his dropbacks last week, so watch his status.
🐴 3. Indianapolis Colts at Washington Commanders (London)
The situation: Through two games the Colts ranked last in the league in total yards, points, yards per play, passing yards and yards per dropback allowed. They had 22 missed tackles in that span, second-worst in the NFL. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner is on injured reserve for at least four games, and the defense already moved play-calling from safety Camryn Bynum to linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither. Sportsnaut keeps Indy out of its Week 4 bottom 10, but FOX Sports and Football Database still put the Colts in the bottom two in total defense. Indianapolis is roughly a 3-point favorite with a total near 47, and kickoff is 9:30 a.m. ET in London.
Scheme: Lou Anarumo mixes man and zone and changes his coverage plan from game to game. He arrived in Indianapolis known for tight, press-man looks, disguised coverages and more pressure than his predecessor.
Who benefits: Marcus Mariota is expected to start again if Jayden Daniels (elbow) does not clear, and he threw three touchdowns against Seattle last week. Terry McLaurin (6 catches, 77 yards, 1 TD) is the top target. Stefon Diggs, Treylon Burks and Rachaad White (35 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown last week) are secondary plays. Opposing backs Derrick Henry and Kenneth Walker have repeatedly broken tackles against Indy, which favors White.
🤠 4. Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans
The situation: After two games Dallas was 29th in EPA per rush allowed and 30th in EPA per dropback allowed, with five yards per carry allowed and just two sacks. Baltimore then averaged 6.5 yards per play and scored four touchdowns on six red-zone trips against them. Cornerback Cobie Durant and safeties Malik Hooker and P.J. Locke were questionable before the Baltimore game, so check their status before kickoff. Sportsnaut ranks the Cowboys 30th. Houston is a 2.5-point favorite with a 47.5 total.
Scheme: Christian Parker is in his first year as defensive coordinator and brings a Vic Fangio-style approach. Expect two-high safety looks that rotate after the snap, Cover 6 principles, and zone coverages that turn into man as the play develops.
Who benefits: C.J. Stroud threw for 353 yards against Cincinnati. Nico Collins (hamstring) has a “decent chance” to return, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and he is a full start if he is active. Xavier Hutchinson is the next option if Collins sits.
🐦 5. Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants
The situation: Sportsnaut ranks Arizona 28th. The Cardinals lost cornerback Will Johnson to injured reserve with a neck injury, and they gave up 155 yards and three touchdowns to Jaxon Smith-Njigba against Seattle. This is the softest matchup of the five. The line is close to a pick’em with a 44.5 total, Jameis Winston is starting for the injured Jaxson Dart, and the Giants have not scored a touchdown in two straight games.
Scheme: Nick Rallis runs a zone-heavy defense built on Cover 6, which pairs Cover 2 on one side of the field with Cover 4 on the other. Arizona used it on 42.9% of snaps in Week 1, the highest rate in the league, and blitzes on only about 20% of plays.
Who benefits: Cam Skattebo led the Giants with 100 all-purpose yards last week and catches passes out of the backfield, which suits a zone-first defense that rarely blitzes. Malik Nabers had 5 catches for 26 yards in the rain and is a bounce-back candidate. Treat both as solid starts rather than smash plays, since Winston struggled with accuracy last week.
