Seven times in Week 4, all five of NFL.com’s experts picked the same team. Four of those teams lost. That is a 3-4 record on the easiest calls on the board, and the Doctor is not signing off on it.
Exhibit A: The Steelers Were a Thursday Night Sure Thing
Bergman, Cersosimo, Filice, Kownack and Parr all took Pittsburgh at Cleveland. The Browns won 27-24 on a game-winning field goal and moved into first place in the AFC North. The panel still walked into the wall.
Exhibit B: Buffalo at Home Was Supposed to Settle It
All five NFL.com experts picked Buffalo over New England. The Patriots went to Orchard Park and won 29-26 on a fourth-quarter comeback led by Drake Maye. Unanimous panel, road team, division rival, wrong.
Exhibit C: Detroit and Arizona Got Unanimous Votes and Delivered Nothing
The same five experts all had the Lions at Carolina. The Panthers won 32-26 on Sunday Night Football behind a career night from Tetairoa McMillan. Earlier that day they were all on the Cardinals at the Giants, and New York won 36-24 at MetLife after Deonte Banks returned an interception 98 yards for the clinching score. Two more unanimous picks, two more losses.
Clean Bill of Health
The other three unanimous calls held. Baltimore beat Tennessee 24-18, Minnesota beat Miami 15-10, and Seattle beat the Chargers at home. The split panels did better than the united ones. NFL.com’s experts went 3-2 for Dallas over Houston and 3-2 for the Rams over Philadelphia, and the majority won both: the Cowboys took it 34-30 and the Rams 24-20 in Philadelphia.
This Week’s Trend: Agreement Is a Symptom
The Browns, Patriots, Panthers and Giants all won a game that every one of NFL.com’s five experts had them losing. When the whole panel agrees, the Doctor starts looking for what they missed. Monday night’s Falcons-Saints game hasn’t kicked off, and NFL.com’s panel is split 3-2 on Atlanta, so that chart stays open until next week.
