Every Tuesday, Defensive Diagnosis takes the five weakest defenses on the upcoming slate and finds the skill players best set up to feast on them. The ranking blends season-long results through Week 4 (points and yards allowed, plus the Sportsnaut and Pro Football Network defense rankings), this week’s Vegas lines, and the latest injury news. Coordinator names and coverage tendencies are checked against two sources each.
Week 5 has a double-exploit game: Lions at Cardinals, where both defenses made the list. The total is 53.5 to 54 depending on the book.
🦁 1. Detroit Lions
The situation: Detroit ranks last in Pro Football Network’s Week 4 defense rankings and 31st in Sportsnaut’s. The Lions allow a league-worst 31.7 points per game and 299.3 passing yards per game, and they have given up 30 or more points in three of four games. Safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph have been out, and Aidan Hutchinson is carrying the pass rush. Last week Carolina scored 32. They visit Arizona as 4- to 4.5-point favorites.
Scheme: Coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has moved to zone on 76.9% of snaps, up from 63.1% last season, with 15.7% man. The two-high shells are meant to take away explosive plays, and the cost is shorter throws underneath. Tight ends have done the most damage: 29 catches, 351 yards and 6 touchdowns through three games.
Who benefits: Trey McBride (33 catches, 242 yards, 2 TDs) is the cleanest fit against that tight end history. Michael Wilson (25 catches, 258 yards, 1 TD) is the other volume option. Jacoby Brissett threw three interceptions last week and Arizona’s left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. is out for the season, so expect points to come with turnovers and sacks mixed in. Jeremiyah Love has a new ankle injury, so check his status before kickoff.
🤠 2. Dallas Cowboys
The situation: Sportsnaut ranks Dallas last, and Pro Football Network has them 31st. The Cowboys allow 387.0 yards per game (30th) and 179.7 rushing yards per game (31st). They gave up 34 to Baltimore and let Houston’s C.J. Stroud post 335 net passing yards. Safety Jalen Thompson is out multiple weeks, and Dallas acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from Pittsburgh to patch the secondary. The Cowboys host Tampa Bay on Thursday night as 9.5- to 10-point favorites, with totals between 46.5 and 47.5.
Scheme: Christian Parker, in his first NFL coordinator job, runs a multiple 3-4 base that shifts to 4-3 spacing. He has said he will play man if his corners can, and so far the data shows zone on 72.0% of snaps and man on 20.2%.
Who benefits: The matchup has a catch. Baker Mayfield is out at least three weeks with a dislocated thumb, so undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels starts. In his first start he threw for 148 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, and ran for 55. Bucky Irving (40 carries for 180 yards, plus 13 catches for 61 yards) is the best bet against the 31st-ranked run defense. Emeka Egbuka (13 catches, 141 yards, 1 TD) is the receiver to trust, since Jalen McMillan is out 6 to 8 weeks. A big Dallas lead would also push Daniels into the dropbacks the Cowboys want him to take.
🐬 3. Miami Dolphins
The situation: Miami is 30th in both Sportsnaut’s and Pro Football Network’s rankings and allows 28.7 points per game. Through three games opponents completed 80.26% of their passes against the Dolphins, and Miami had no sacks. Sportsnaut notes the Week 4 unit held its opponent to 10 points, though Miami’s offense kept it on the field for nearly 40 minutes. Cincinnati visits as a 7.5- to 8.5-point favorite, with totals posted anywhere from 42.5 to 46.5.
Scheme: First-year coordinator Sean Duggan, who came over from the Packers’ linebackers room, is using more four-man fronts with wide-9 ends, and says he’ll add press coverage in select situations. The numbers still read mostly zone: 73.9% zone, 18.2% man.
Who benefits: Joe Burrow (743 yards, 6 TDs, 70.9% completions) should be efficient against a pass defense that gave up four completions in every five throws. The receiver group needs a status check, though. Ja’Marr Chase is in concussion protocol, and Tee Higgins (11 catches for 157 yards last week) is day-to-day with an adductor injury. If either sits, the other absorbs the targets. Chase Brown (197 yards on 49 carries) is the safe floor.
🐦 4. Arizona Cardinals
The situation: Arizona is 29th in both Sportsnaut’s and Pro Football Network’s rankings. The Cardinals allow 362.0 yards per game and 27.0 points per game, and they have given up 9.3 yards per pass attempt. Left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. is done for the year, which will hurt the offense more than the defense. They host Detroit on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
Scheme: Nick Rallis’s defense leans on Cover 6, a hybrid of Cover 2 and Cover 4. In Week 1 it was 42.9% of Arizona’s snaps, the highest rate in the NFL that week. Sharp Football’s coverage data puts the Cardinals at 78.6% zone and 10.7% man, and Rallis blitzed on only 20% of dropbacks in Week 1. Cover 6 asks defenders to read two different looks on one play, and communication breakdowns leave receivers open in the flats.
Who benefits: Jared Goff threw 52 times for 412 yards against Carolina, and that volume should carry over in a game with a 53.5 to 54 total. Jameson Williams (6 catches, 102 yards), Sam LaPorta (8 catches, 84 yards, 1 TD) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (8 catches, 75 yards) are all in range. Isaac TeSlaa had 4 catches for 95 yards last week. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 307 yards and 4 touchdowns in the first three games, then managed 46 yards on 15 carries against Carolina.
🧀 5. Green Bay Packers
The situation: Green Bay is 27th in Pro Football Network’s rankings and 28th in Sportsnaut’s. The Packers allow 30.3 points per game, tied for third-worst, and 138.7 rushing yards per game (28th). Micah Parsons is out until November, and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper tore his Achilles in Week 4. Isaiah McDuffie and Ty’Ron Hopper now take those snaps. The Packers are 2.5-point home favorites against Chicago, with the total at 44.5 to 45.5.
Scheme: Jonathan Gannon took over as coordinator after Jeff Hafley left to coach the Dolphins. His defenses disguise their looks, and Sharp Football has the Packers at 79.4% zone and 11.6% man.
Who benefits: Caleb Williams is out with a hamstring injury, so Tyson Bagent starts (25 of 34 for 268 yards and an interception against the Jets). The run game is the play. D’Andre Swift leads the ground game, and Kyle Monangai ran for 146 yards and 2 TDs in Week 4, though his thumb injury needs a Monday check. Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III carry more risk with a backup quarterback, so treat them as flex options.
