Week 5 thinned out several backfields and receiver rooms at once. Will Shipley left with a foot injury and Saquon Barkley is still week to week with a hamstring, which leaves the Eagles with one healthy running back. Quinshon Judkins was seen leaving the Browns’ loss to the Jets in a walking boot. Michael Pittman Jr. is on injured reserve in Pittsburgh. David Montgomery went down with a groin injury, and Monday night’s 37-34 overtime win by the Bills over the Rams closed out the slate with DJ Moore inactive. Free Agent Triage reads the week’s waiver columns from FantasyPros, RotoBaller, Yahoo, SI, NFL.com, ESPN and Fantasy Life, logs every name they recommend, then checks each one against snap share, target share, the injury report and the next three matchups. Most of the consensus holds up. Three names don’t.
Rankings are built for half-PPR, with PPR and standard notes where the format changes the call. Rostered percentages are Yahoo numbers, and every player listed is rostered in fewer than 50% of Yahoo leagues. FAAB bids assume a $100 budget.
1. Dameon Pierce, RB, Philadelphia Eagles
Rostered: 2% | FAAB: 12% | Next three: vs. CAR, vs. DAL, at WSH
The case: Pierce was the last healthy Eagles back standing in the 19-17 loss at Jacksonville. He carried 11 times for 14 yards and caught two of five targets for minus-2 yards, so the production was poor, though he got the volume. Shipley hurt his foot before halftime and didn’t return, Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve, and Barkley is week to week after tweaking his right hamstring against the Rams. Nobody else on the roster is healthy enough to take the job.
Consensus check: Near-unanimous. FantasyPros, RotoBaller, Yahoo, SI and Fantasy Life all list him. Suggested bids run from $4 on FantasyPros to $19 at Yahoo, so the market hasn’t settled.
Prognosis: Short-term starter, with a hard ceiling. If Barkley sits again, Pierce is a volume-based RB2 against Carolina. If Barkley is cleared, Pierce goes back to handcuff duty. He is worth the same in standard and a little less in PPR, where his five targets netted nothing.
2. Germie Bernard, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
Rostered: 1% | FAAB: 10% | Next three: at TB, at NO, vs. CLE
The case: The rookie caught six of nine targets for 80 yards in the 34-22 win over Indianapolis. Both his 28 routes and his nine targets led the team. Pittman is on injured reserve, Roman Wilson has a hand injury that may cost him time, and Ben Skowronek has a calf problem. That leaves Bernard as the receiver Aaron Rodgers has available.
Consensus check: Near-unanimous. FantasyPros, RotoBaller, Yahoo, SI, NFL.com and Fantasy Life all feature him, and Fantasy Life’s drop column names him as the replacement for a dropped receiver.
Prognosis: Rest-of-season hold with WR3 value while the injuries last. Rodgers has thrown three touchdowns in each of his last three games, and Pittsburgh’s next two trips are to Tampa Bay and New Orleans. Wilson’s return would trim the role but not remove it.
3. Brenton Strange, TE, Jacksonville Jaguars
Rostered: 32% | FAAB: 5% | Next three: vs. HOU, bye, vs. IND
The case: Strange has 14 catches for 163 yards on 16 targets over the last two games, with eight or more targets in each. He caught his latest passes in the 19-17 win over the Eagles, which Cam Little decided with a 57-yard field goal.
Consensus check: Widely backed. FantasyPros, Yahoo, SI, RotoBaller and NFL.com all list him. His rostered rate runs from 27% to 47% depending on the platform, so check your league before you bid.
Prognosis: Rest-of-season TE1 with a bye in Week 7. Eight-plus targets in back-to-back games is starting-tight-end volume, and he scores about the same in standard. In PPR he moves up a spot.
4. Kendrick Bourne, WR, Arizona Cardinals
Rostered: 6% | FAAB: 5% | Next three: at LAR, vs. DEN, at DAL
The case: Bourne caught five of eight targets for 70 yards in the 45-21 loss to Detroit. He led Arizona in catches and receiving yards, and his eight targets trailed only Trey McBride. The Cardinals traded Marvin Harrison Jr. to Houston, which moves Bourne up behind Michael Wilson and McBride.
Consensus check: Widely backed. FantasyPros, Yahoo, RotoBaller and SI all list him. RotoBaller’s ESPN number is 2%, while SI’s Sleeper figure is 11%, so his ownership depends on the platform.
Prognosis: Flex play against the Rams, with a target share that should hold now that Harrison is gone. In PPR he is a clear flex. In standard he is a bench stash.
5. Jameis Winston, QB, New York Giants
Rostered: 6% | FAAB: 4% | Next three: vs. NO, at HOU, bye
The case: Winston threw three touchdown passes in the 27-27 overtime tie with Washington, his second straight game with three, for six scores in two weeks. With Jaxson Dart out for the season, the job is his.
Consensus check: Widely backed as a streamer. FantasyPros, Yahoo, RotoBaller and SI list him, and SI notes the revenge angle against the Saints.
Prognosis: Two-week stream, then a bye in Week 8. He plays the Saints this week and Houston next. In superflex, he is a hold.
6. Kendre Miller, RB, New Orleans Saints
Rostered: 7% | FAAB: 4% | Next three: at NYG, vs. PIT, bye
The case: Miller carried 10 times in the 23-13 loss to Minnesota, seven more than Alvin Kamara, who had five touches and has been dealing with a back issue.
Consensus check: Backed. FantasyPros, SI and Yahoo list him. SI has his rostered rate at 17% on Sleeper, so he is further along there.
Prognosis: Handcuff with a few weeks of upside. If Kamara’s back keeps limiting him, Miller keeps the carries. The Saints have a bye in Week 8, so the window is short.
7. Pat Freiermuth, TE, Pittsburgh Steelers
Rostered: 15% | FAAB: 3% | Next three: at TB, at NO, vs. CLE
The case: Freiermuth has four touchdowns in five games and saw a season-high seven targets against Indianapolis. With Pittman on injured reserve, the Steelers have fewer places to go.
Consensus check: Widely backed. FantasyPros, Yahoo, SI and RotoBaller all list him.
Prognosis: Touchdown-dependent TE1. Strange has the safer floor, and Freiermuth has the scoring upside. In PPR he is a notch higher than in standard.
8. Dontayvion Wicks, WR, Philadelphia Eagles
Rostered: 44% | FAAB: 3% | Next three: vs. CAR, vs. DAL, at WSH
The case: Wicks caught five of eight targets for 63 yards against Jacksonville. DeVonta Smith has missed two games with a hamstring injury, and Dallas Goedert returned to lead the team with six catches.
Consensus check: Backed. FantasyPros, Yahoo and SI list him. His rostered rate is 44% at Yahoo and 53% on Sleeper, so he may already be gone in your league.
Prognosis: Flex play while Smith is out. Once Smith returns, Wicks drops back to the bench. In PPR he is an easy flex, and in standard he is a stash.
9. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Rostered: 27% | FAAB: 2% | Next three: at TB, at NO, vs. CLE
The case: Rodgers has thrown three touchdown passes in each of his last three games, scoring more than 20 fantasy points each time and averaging 275.3 passing yards over that stretch.
Consensus check: Widely backed. FantasyPros, Yahoo, SI and RotoBaller all list him. The rostered rate ranges from 19% on ESPN to 35% on Sleeper.
Prognosis: Rest-of-season QB streamer. He has Bernard and Freiermuth to throw to, and Pittsburgh’s schedule is Tampa Bay, New Orleans, then Cleveland.
10. Kimani Vidal, RB, Los Angeles Chargers
Rostered: 2% | FAAB: 2% | Next three: at KC, bye, at LAR
The case: Vidal ran eight times for 57 yards and a touchdown in the 23-17 loss to Denver. The Chargers’ backfield is a three-way split with Omarion Hampton and Keaton Mitchell, and Vidal’s snap share has risen each week while Hampton’s has fallen.
Consensus check: Split. FantasyPros values him at $1 and Yahoo at $5. SI lists Mitchell instead, at 54% on Sleeper.
Prognosis: Bench stash. The Chargers have a bye in Week 7, so he can wait a week before you decide whether he’s worth a roster spot.
Just Missed the Cut
Efton Chism III, WR, Patriots (1%): He caught five of a team-high six targets for 57 yards in New England’s 45-17 win over Las Vegas. A.J. Brown has a high-ankle injury and Mack Hollins has a calf injury. Chism is the add if Brown stays out.
Tyler Higbee, TE, Rams (4%): Terrance Ferguson is on injured reserve with an ankle injury and can return in Week 8. FantasyPros counts 23 targets for Higbee over the last three games, and SI has 12 over the last two. His rostered rate is 30% on Sleeper, so check your league.
Ryan Flournoy, WR, Cowboys (8%): He caught three of four targets for 90 yards, including a 48-yarder, after CeeDee Lamb left with a quad injury. SI says the injury isn’t considered serious. Add Flournoy only if Lamb sits.
Jaleel McLaughlin, RB, Browns (0%): He played 14 snaps without a touch against the Jets. Judkins left in a walking boot, Raheim Sanders has a hip injury and Dylan Sampson is on injured reserve. He is a stash if Judkins is out.
Where the Doctor Disagrees
Keon Coleman, WR, Bills: He is 35% to 40% rostered, and several columns expect a bigger role than he has. He caught one pass on Monday night, a 7-yard touchdown, in a game where Josh Allen attempted 19 passes and James Cook carried 25 times. Khalil Shakir caught the 57-yard pass that set up the winning drive. Pass on Coleman.
Darius Cooper, WR, Eagles: RotoBaller and SI like his four touchdowns, and he had three targets last week. FantasyPros calls him fool’s gold, and we agree. His production comes from touchdown efficiency on a handful of looks, and Smith’s return would push him back to a bit part. Pass.
Samaje Perine, RB, Bengals: He ran 14 times for 68 yards and caught a touchdown in the win over Miami. Cincinnati is on bye in Week 6, and Baltimore is next. He cannot help you before Week 7, so he is a stash for deeper leagues only.
Safe to Drop
Kenneth Gainwell, RB, Buccaneers: Fantasy Life calls Bucky Irving the workhorse, and FantasyPros has Gainwell at no more than five carries in any game. He is a change-of-pace option.
Chris Rodriguez Jr., RB, Jaguars: Bhayshul Tuten played 49 snaps (68.1%) and had 22 carries against the Eagles. Rodriguez dropped to nine snaps and two carries, with some red-zone work.
Don’t drop yet: David Montgomery and Omarion Hampton. Montgomery left the Titans game with a groin injury, and Woody Marks is the add if he misses time, though Marks is above the 50% line at Yahoo. Houston’s bye is not until Week 8, so hold him until the injury report clears. Hampton’s snaps have fallen, but the Chargers’ line is banged up and the committee could shift again.

Quick Answers
Who is the best Week 6 waiver wire pickup? Dameon Pierce. With Barkley week to week and Shipley hurt, he is the only healthy Eagles running back.
How much FAAB should I spend on Dameon Pierce? About 12% of a $100 budget. Go higher if you are thin at running back and Barkley is on your bench.
Which tight end should I add in Week 6? Brenton Strange if he is available, since his targets are steady. Pat Freiermuth if you need touchdown upside and Strange is gone.
